GROWTH
INVESTMENTS
Growth accounts typically share the following characteristics:
-
Investments that pursue growth can be viewed as owned
investments
-
As a growth investor, you are buying ownership, usually in a business, through
the purchase of that company's stock
- Your investment will achieve growth only as that business
grows and the value of its stock increases
-
Common stocks, which represent ownership in a business, are the most common
growth investments
TYPICAL INVESTOR PROFILE
Pursuing growth involves accepting the highest degree of investment risk.
Growth investors must be able to tolerate significant declines in their
investment accounts, both emotionally and financially. Over the long term - ten
or fifteen years - pursuing growth usually leads to higher returns than less
risky investments. However, over the short term -- one to five years - growth
investments can decline 20-25 percent or more in value.
Successful growth investors need patience and must be able to stay the course
during downturns rather than react to market declines by "selling low," thereby
locking in their losses.
