Making a lasting impact on Maui

As the title sponsor of the Sentry Tournament of Champions, we're part of the Maui community.

It’s a responsibility we take seriously, as we do in all the places we live and work. At home and on Maui, our year-round commitment is to be an engaged corporate citizen.

Last summer, after the 2020 PGA TOUR Sentry Tournament of Champions, the tournament presented checks totaling $459,743 to local Maui charities. Our own charitable giving programs also support charitable organizations on Maui, as well as a scholarship program for Maui students.

There’s a long history of charitable giving at PGA TOUR events. In a special place like Maui, you may need to look closer to find the need, but it's there.

Since Sentry® became the Sentry Tournament of Champions title sponsor in 2018, we’ve followed our company philosophy of strategic giving when allocating funds raised for charity during the tournament. We focus on education, workforce development, quality-of-life initiatives, and community-based human services. Spending time on the island, building relationships, and having regular conversations with area leaders showed us the island has unique areas of need—and that the most meaningful way to fill those needs is to support charitable organizations that understand Maui well.

The current list of local recipient organizations includes Boy Scouts of America, Friends of the Children’s Justice Center, Hale Makua Health Services, J. Walter Cameron Center, Ka Lima O Maui, Lahainaluna High School Foundation, and Lahaina Junior Golf. Each has their own goals, and each may use the donations they receive as they see fit to help the people they serve. A common thread is making sure money donated on Maui stays on the island.

These organizations are critically important on Maui. The cost of living in a tourism-based economy is very high. It poses many challenges to locals, many of whom work multiple jobs to make ends meet and still struggle to cover basic needs—even with assistance from community organizations.

In May of 2020, after recognizing the COVID-19 pandemic would make these challenges more difficult, we donated $200,000 to Maui United Way as part of a $1.07 million commitment to organizations across the nation providing coronavirus relief support.

Typically, the Sentry Tournament of Champions is the place to be for a few days at the beginning of the calendar year. But due to COVID-19, the 2021 tournament is going to look different than what we’ve become accustomed to. It's still one of the most captivating events of the golf season. The pandemic won't stop us from being a committed part of the vibrant Maui community the rest of the year, either.
