“Accidents don’t happen 9 to 5,” said John Wiley, D&G Transportation driver relations. “I remember an accident near St. Louis where a car hit one of our trucks. It was a Saturday afternoon, and the claims staff at Sentry had someone on the scene within the hour.”

The car punctured a hole in one of the truck’s fuel tanks, causing diesel to leak on the road. Sentry’s claims staff responded quickly to get the fuel spill cleaned up. “It helped us out, saving money for us,” said Wiley.

Wiley says his dispatchers know they can call Sentry 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. We’ll be there to assist them in accident clean-up, as well as transfer of product from one truck to another.

Wyoming snowstorm

“We had an instance where a truck was hit by a storm in the middle of Wyoming,” said Wiley. “Despite the snowstorm, Sentry got someone over, and assisted with the transfer—just one day after the storm—which saved the product from spoiling. The product was delivered a day late, but it was fine, and it saved us a big claim against cargo.”

Driver safety is key

D&G looks to us for more than just claims assistance. They’ve built out their safety program with the help of our safety services staff, providing training for their drivers. “Mike Yonka is our safety consultant,” said Wiley. “Our drivers all know him, they respect him, and will ask him questions one on one. If he’s talking to an experienced driver, he knows how to talk to them, and he knows how to relate to an inexperienced driver too.”

Yonka is like all of our trucking safety consultants. They on average have more than 20 years of trucking safety experience. That experience gives them the knowledge to understand driver concerns, problems and issues, and what it is like to be on the road for extended periods of time.

“Mike comes for safety training a couple of times a year,” said Wiley. “And he’ll be here all day long. He knows that our drivers are not always available between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. That’s a big plus as he’s willing to hang around because he knows it works that way.”
